Wyrd & Flame was created as a place for the study and exploration of Norse tradition, runic systems, mythology, and the cultural world of the early Germanic peoples. The aim of the website is simple: to make knowledge of these subjects accessible while keeping the material grounded in historical context and responsible interpretation.
Across the site you will find articles exploring the Elder Futhark, Norse cosmology, mythology, folklore, and the wider traditions that shaped the northern world. Many of these subjects are often simplified or removed from their cultural background in modern writing. Wyrd & Flame seeks to provide deeper exploration, drawing from historical sources such as the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, saga literature, and archaeological evidence where possible.
The site also includes practical guides for those interested in working with the runes or exploring aspects of Norse spirituality. These are presented with care to distinguish between what is historically attested and what belongs to modern interpretation. Maintaining this distinction is important in order to preserve clarity and intellectual honesty when discussing northern traditions.

Interest in Norse mythology, runic traditions and the wider pre-Christian cultures of northern Europe has grown enormously in recent years. That renewed interest has encouraged more people than ever to explore the surviving sources, archaeology and languages of the Norse and Germanic worlds. At the same time, however, complex subjects are increasingly reduced to short definitions, modern symbolism is presented as ancient fact, and ideas are frequently repeated without their original historical context. Wyrd & Flame was created as a response to that problem: a free educational resource dedicated to exploring these subjects in greater depth, while recognising the limitations and uncertainties of the evidence that survives.
Our approach is centred on research, context and accessibility. Wherever possible, we draw upon primary literary sources, linguistic evidence, archaeology and modern scholarship to examine not only what we know, but how we know it. Norse and Germanic traditions developed across different regions, languages and centuries, and they cannot always be understood through a single interpretation. Rather than presenting reconstruction, modern Pagan practice and historical evidence as though they were interchangeable, Wyrd & Flame aims to distinguish between them clearly. Where the evidence is uncertain, disputed or incomplete, we believe that uncertainty should be acknowledged rather than filled with convenient answers.
Across Wyrd & Flame you will find an expanding library covering Norse and Germanic mythology, history, runology, cosmology, folklore, historical religious practice, literature, language and cultural development. Our work explores subjects ranging from individual deities and mythological narratives to concepts of the soul, ritual practices, surviving manuscripts and the societies that produced them. Our runic studies examine the Elder Futhark and other historical runic traditions within their linguistic and archaeological contexts, looking beyond modern rune meanings to consider inscriptions, development, usage and the evidence from which later interpretations emerged.
Alongside the website, we produce books and longer-form educational works for readers who want to take their research further. These allow individual subjects to be examined with considerably more depth and structure than is possible within a single article. Above all, Wyrd & Flame is built around the idea that learning should encourage exploration rather than unquestioning acceptance. We do not expect our readers simply to take our word for something; we want people to investigate the sources, ask difficult questions, encounter different scholarly interpretations and develop their own informed understanding. History is rarely as neat as the internet makes it appear, and acknowledging gaps in our knowledge is just as important as discussing what the surviving evidence can tell us.

Who are we?
Founder and Author -
My name is Ellesha McKay, and I’m an author and independent scholar with a particular interest in Norse and Germanic history, mythology, religion and cultural development. I’ve been studying Norse Paganism and the history surrounding these traditions for over 17 years, and over that time my interests have grown far beyond simply learning the mythology. I’m particularly interested in the development and movement of Germanic peoples and their traditions, historical religious practices, runology, the Elder Futhark, Old Norse literature and understanding how the beliefs we recognise as “Norse” developed and changed over time.
A huge part of my work is questioning the information that gets repeated within modern Norse Pagan spaces. There is so much information online that has been simplified, taken out of context or repeated so often that modern interpretations eventually begin to look like historical fact. I enjoy going back to the evidence, finding where an idea actually came from and looking at what the sources really tell us. Sometimes that means finding strong historical evidence for something, and other times it means admitting that we simply don’t know. For me, that uncertainty is part of what makes studying the Norse and Germanic world so interesting.
I created Wyrd & Flame because I wanted somewhere to bring that research together and make it accessible to other people. Through the website I write about Norse mythology, Germanic religion, runes, cosmology, folklore, historical practices, migration, literature and the wider cultures behind these traditions. My research draws on material such as the Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, saga literature, skaldic poetry, historical runic inscriptions and archaeological evidence, alongside linguistic research and modern academic scholarship.
I’m also an author, and much of my longer work focuses on subjects that simply cannot be properly explored in a short article or social media post. My books allow me to dig much deeper into the sources, different interpretations and historical context behind a subject while still making that information understandable to people who may not have an academic background.
I don’t claim to have every answer, and I don’t think anyone studying these subjects ever truly finishes learning. New research appears, interpretations are challenged and sometimes you find evidence that completely changes the way you previously understood something. That is exactly why I love doing what I do.
At the heart of my work is a fairly simple idea: go back to the sources, question what you are told, understand the context, and never stop learning. That is the approach behind both my writing and Wyrd & Flame.

My name is Jobi. I am an author, a devoted believer, and a Norse Pagan convert for more than five years. My path has been one of constant study - exploring the old ways from Proto-Germanic and Old Germanic traditions to the faiths of the Norse. These ancient beliefs, spanning millennia, continue to inspire countless seekers who long to walk the same path.
At heart, I am a wanderer. I search for more than what the eyes can see or the ears can hear, striving always to uncover deeper truths. My purpose is to carry and spread the flame - sparks of the wisdom once spoken by our beloved deities and spiritual ancestors, gifted to us so that we may keep them alive and share them with one another.
From a young age, I educated myself tirelessly through books and research. With time, that search awakened my calling. I heard the sound of ancient horns echoing through Midgard, reminding me that this path has always been mine. Now, I walk it alongside fellow authors and Norse devotees, rowing the same ship across time. Together, we honour those who came before us, striving to make them proud in the modern day.
My gift is to speak of the divine deities we worship, follow, and revere - preserving their stories, heroics, and timeless tales.
